Bala Mercy Children’s Centre and Orphanage Project is caring for over 3000 ORPHANED children. Across the 5 affliate orphanages and schools. These are orphans, abandoned children, street children, disadvantaged and poor children.  The home supports these from scratch and from very meagre resources of the sponsoring church constituency, and the church Bala Faith Christian outreach centre - -[WORD AFLAME FELLOWSHIP CHURCH MISSION]

The church sponsoring the project is established in a poverty stricken and populated area, most people live below poverty line.

HIV/AIDS and other related diseases has killed many people and has left children, orphans, widows and the aged with no one to care for them.  Right now, they’re over 1,900,000 children orphans within the region, most of them orphaned by Aids.

This is why Bala FCOC has been compelled by the love of Christ (2Cor.5:14).  We are moved with compassion as our Lord was always moved with compassion to heal the sick and feed the hungry, both physically and spiritually.  (Mathew, 9:36, Mark8.2) and also fulfil the of good religion and faith.

ORPHANED CHILDREN SITUATION ANALYSIS
Bala Mercy children Centre is an orphanage home and a support centre to over 400 orphans.  Many children have been left orphans in Rachuonyo District like any other parts of Kenya in the wake of HIV/AIDS pandemic.  The orphaned children are traumatized by their parent's sickness and eventual deaths and have no means to support themselves.  It is estimated that there are at least 500 children orphaned by AIDS in Koyugi Location.  A recent rapid assessment study conducted by the centre on the orphans situation and community coping mechanisms in West Karachuonyo Division shows that extended family members do provide care for orphans.  They however cannot cope with this extra mouth to feed due to harsh economic situation.  About 50% of those caring for orphans are uncles or aunts.  40% are third generation caretakers (widows and grandparents) who usually have little practical help to offer a part form emotional and psychological support.  The remaining 10% of orphans are on their own.

There lacks a strong social welfare system to care for orphans on the ground despite their increasing number.  There is now an increasing number of orphans headed households as children resort to staying on their own because auntie's and uncles are either sick themselves or unable to cope.  Without their parent's income, the orphans are in grave danger of becoming destitute.  Child prostitution, drug abuse, early child marriages and child labour are also on the rise in nearby centres like Kendu Bay, Kosele, Oyugis and Homabay.  The orphaned girl child opts for early marriages as a means to escaping the widespread poverty and heavy responsibility that come with the deaths of their parents.

The needs of children affected by HIV/AIDS begin to weigh in the community and the relatives long before the death of their parents.  Many here lack basic needs.  Its not uncommon to find them going without regular meals and clothing.  These children also drop out of school due to lack of school uniforms and levies.

Bala Christian Outreach Centre takes in humanitarian call to address the numerous social and economic problems affecting the orphans by establishing Bala Mercy Children Centre as an orphans support home.  By recognizing that support for HIV/AIDS related orphans should not be a one or two years quick support strategy, long term interventions that sees the children into adulthood is desirable.  This is the only true way through which the children can get equal rights in participating to the country's development issues.

The cost of establishing and sustaining the children centre could be enormous (US$300,000).  This would include cost personnel, medical services, feeding and education of the orphans.  Bala Mercy Children Centre would appreciate to work in partnership with any organization having similar feelings.  Any one willing to provide support is most welcome.

Activities
Since inception, Bala Mercy Children's Center has managed to initiate several on going
activities:
  • Over 1000 orphans are receiving support at the centre currently out of which, 120 are attending various primary schools around and 6 are in secondary schools.

  • Identify and select needy orphans to be assisted.

  • Develop orphans personal profiles for better understanding of their family Backgrounds.

  • Assist in finding suitable foster homes for the orphans that will feed, educate and provide health care services for them.

  • Identify and access bursaries for better performing orphans in schools.

  • Provide cloths and psychological counseling services to the affected orphans.

  • Sensitize communities about children's rights.

  • The centre employs 13 teachers and matron who are earning their salaries mainly from pastoral allowances.

  • Create community awareness to mitigate the socio-economic impacts if HIV/AIDS.

  • The centre has established a kindergarten school for young orphans through members contribution and well wishers.

  • Provide community counseling services to the affected people.

  • Negotiate with schools to take up orphans for support.
Constraints
  • The centre has limited financial resources to support higher education for the orphans.

  • The ever-increasing number of orphans shows more demand for centre services (education, clothing and feeding).

  • There is need for established institution medical services to support the 400 orphans residing at the centre and the people around.

  • Community level poverty puts a lot of pressure for extended centre's services even to the aged.

  • There is a need to establish centre managed income generating activities as a means to future sustainability with diminishing external assistance.

  • The centre lacks good classrooms and a dormitory block for the orphans who are currently receiving their academic services at the centre. There is also a need to establish a water system and buy a generator for power service.

  • The centre has no vehicle to support emergency transport services.

  • There is a need for improved feeding program for the 400 orphans currently cared by the centre.
Way Forward
Increase in the children population and the continued demand for the centre services are the greatest challenge faced by the centre. The situation is compounded by dimiship resource. The centre needs to focus on future expansion of its activities which are currently lacking to include health care services, school, orphan recreational centre and library services. Activities that goes towards the centre's self reliability will also be given priority. The purpose of this proposal therefore it to seek financial assistance to Implement the development plan as listed in this way forward. Support for any individual component is appreciated.

Planned Activities
  • Improving the current structures by establishing eight more teaching classrooms, a dormitory block and a water supply system.

  • Sustaining the ongoing feeding program for the 400 orphans.

  • Establish clinical services for the orphans and the surrounding community.

  • Establishing a vocational training centre for the orphans to build their technical capacity into responsible adulthood.

  • Establish a viable income generating activity towards the centre self-sustainability.
