Newsletter No 3, September 2008
Dear Supporter,
We hope this finds you rested and relaxed despite the rather indifferent summer.
Our September 11th meeting on The Bowen Technique should help you deal with the renewed stresses which autumn and winter bring. In a hands-on demonstration instructor John Francis will show us how, through gentle manipulation, it can release tensions and help with realignment of the body. As usual we will meet in St Barbara's Church Hall from 2 to 3.30 pm. John's talk will be preceded by a brief AGM and followed by refreshments. Admission is £2.50. St Barbara's has its own car park and the number 19 bus stops nearby.
September will, however, be our last month at St Barbara's as they have now got a twice-monthly Thursday letting which for them, of course, is more attractive than our infrequent meetings. The second and fourth Thursday afternoons, from 1.45 to 3pm, will be taken by yoga instructor Lesley Butterwick who promises "an easy yoga class to meet everyone's needs, with chair, floor and meditation practice..." Phone Lesley on 7627 5552 for more details.
We are moving to St John the Baptist Church Hall whose entrance is behind the church on the corner of Spon Street and Corporation Street. It is extremely well served by many local buses, including Park and Ride North and South, but please note that there is absolutely no free parking. Disability badge holders can use Hill Street next door for free; other car owners will be best served in the Precinct Car Park where the charge is £1.80 for 2 hours. There is ample room for dropping people off outside the church in a little-used taxi rank.
Our first meeting in St John's will feature community nutritionist Hellen Murusali. If she chooses to serve up some food, there is a handy adjacent kitchen with serving hatches. Put 13th November, usual times, in your diary.
Our free Open Day on 5th June was well attended and we were heartened to see a lot of new faces. Highlights of the day were probably the tantilising Wiltshire Farm Foods handouts and the EXTEND exercise sessions.
There is obviously a demand for EXTEND classes which existing provision doesn't meet. We as a group will publicise new EXTEND classes throughout the city as they come on stream. Check out what Coventry Sports Centre is providing for the over 60s.
This month we are donating Healthy Bones Packs to every primary school in the city with money we've raised over the years. We'll support the donation with school assemblies and in-class help. If you have connections with local primary schools, please draw this to their attention.
Our Big Bone Walk day (pictured below) in June raised over £500, for which we thank everyone involved. We were grateful for excellent weather and the collaboration of Coventry's Healthy Walks scheme but very disappointed with the poor turnout. If you know why such an event fails to attract participants, do please tell us so that we can somehow widen the appeal the next time.
Next calendar year's plans are nearly finalised. All meetings are on Thursday afternoons, as before.
On 26th February our theme will be "Keeping Yourself Safe". Jackey Binnersley will address the problems and issues around patient-held medical records, i.e. how to make your medical needs easily accessible to anyone who has to treat you, especially in an emergency. Stephen Shoker from the Fire Service will contribute solutions to safety issues in the home.
In April, probably on the 9th, we're hoping to have a Pilates instructor who can tailor this useful exercise regime to people with osteoporosis.
Our June meeting, on the 11th, will be led by Suki Johal, an Occupational Therapist, who will talk about how rehabilitation is organised for someone recovering from a fall.
On 24th September Glen Till, who manages the Mobility Superstore, will bring along samples of his myriad mobility aids, including a scooter, and encourage us to try them out.
We know that acupuncture can effectively relieve pain, so we are delighted that acupuncturist Natalie Saunders will speak to us on 12th November.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FROM NOVEMBER THIS YEAR ALL MEETINGS WILL BE HELD IN ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH HALL IN THE CITY CENTRE.
Hoping to see / meet you at one or another of these events, best wishes from
Lynne Adams (024 7667 6683)
