About us
Background:
Global Welfare Association - GLOWA started as a social group
between students in 1987. The major objective then was to
make adequate use of our African Social Capital through
collectively doing assignments from parents. It took several names
such as the "Katikas," the 'big fives," etc. The organisation then
grew as members matured intellectually. It was finally registered
as a charity organisation in accordance with the 1990 law on the
freedoms of associations in Cameroon in 2003.
The creation of GLOWA was motivated by the near neglect of rural
communities by most government actions in Cameroon. The
organisation therefore focuses more on the human rights of the
vulnerable segment of the population (children, women and the
disabled).
Goal:
The goal of GLOWA is to improve on he situation of neglect,
underdevelopment and abuse of the Cameroonian child especially in
the rural communities where customs and tradition dominates.
Cameroon appears to shrink as child development is concentrated in
the cities, at the detriment of rural children who are the most
exploited and abused through traditional practices and customs.
Objectives:
The objectives of GLOWA include:
- To foster the respect of the rights of the child through
creating awareness and educating the population on the provisions
of the Convention for the Rights of the Child (CRC)
- Encourage the practice of small and medium commercial
agriculture through training and support programmes to very poor
and disabled people.
- Rehabilitate and support very needy people of the community
through a community-based approach in which community members take
active part in the support endeavours.
Mission Statement:
The mission statement of GLOWA is: Teaching and Promoting a culture
of rights and responsibilities.
Strategy of Intervention:
Our strategy of work is very participatory by establishing
partnership with existing groups, communities in need, institutions
etc. Our education, information and communication activities with
the rural populations of Ngie are arranged according to the
occupational programme of the beneficiaries. We also create and run
youths groups.
Activities or Projects:
GLOWA has 6 programmes of activities to enable the organisation
intervene in identified domains.
- Human Rights and Good Governance Programme
- Orphan Care and Support Programme.
- Family Life Education Programme.
- Life Skill Development Programme
- Participatory Need Assessment, Project Design and Execution
Programme
- Group Creation and other Consultancy Activities.
The major programmes include Human Rights and Good Governance,
Orphan Care / Support, and Life Skill Development
Finances:
GLOWA is auto financing and gets her finances principally from the
kind donations from members and other good-hearted individuals. We
also get resources from the sales of the organisation's services
and property.
Staff:
GLOWA has a permanent staff of 3. Most of those working in the
organisation are volunteers.
Expectations:
GLOWA’s major expectation is a positive change in the living
standards of her target group and a veritable culture of rights and
responsibilities in Cameroon.
GLOWA shall also like to partnership with other organisations
around the world for a concerted approach to meeting needs and
experience sharing. We shall like international adoption for some
of the children on our care register. Any support to the scheme
shall facilitate our task and reduce the pressure on us by the ever
increasing number of orphans.
In kind donations in didactic materials, clothing office equipment
is highly solicited.
Volunteers especially in Health education.
